GTA 6 pre-load: date, time and how to prepare your console

Pre-load lets you download the game a week early, so at launch it unlocks at midnight instead of starting a 150–200 GB download. When it opens, how it works on each console and what to clear first.

When pre-load opens

Pre-load start

Rockstar Support: pre-load opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, for digital pre-orders and boxed copies. The box holds a download code instead of a disc. The PlayStation Store lists a 7-day pre-load for both editions.
Release date
November 19, 2026 C source
Repeated in Rockstar's launch trailer post on October 15, 2026, and listed on the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store. Rockstar has not said what time the game unlocks on launch day.

Rockstar Support says pre-load opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, for digital pre-orders and boxed copies. Local midnight means the time zone set on your console, so pre-load opens at a different moment in each country.

The game unlocks on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has not said at what time, so check the store listing on your console the day before. A pre-loaded copy still needs the day-one patch, which is why we recommend keeping extra free space rather than filling the drive to the last gigabyte after the pre-load.

How pre-load works on PS5 and Xbox

PS5

  1. Pre-order on the PlayStation Store, or redeem the code from the box in the PlayStation Store menu (… › Redeem Code).
  2. On pre-load day, open the game tile in your Game Library and choose Download, or let the console start it automatically if auto-downloads are on (Settings › Saved Data and Game/App Settings › Automatic Updates).
  3. The pre-load shows in Downloads/Uploads with a lock icon. It unlocks at midnight on release day without another download, apart from the day-one patch.

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Pre-order on the Microsoft Store, or redeem the box code with Redeem in the Microsoft Store menu on the console or in the Xbox app on your phone.
  2. On pre-load day, find the game under My games & apps › Full library › Owned games and choose Install. Choose the internal SSD or an expansion card as the destination; USB drives cannot run it.
  3. The install finishes and waits. At midnight on release day the game starts; the day-one patch downloads first if it is not already applied.

The boxed edition holds a download code instead of a disc C source. Rockstar says boxes ship and reach stores from November 12, 2026, and the code works the moment you have it, so a physical pre-order can pre-load on the same day as a digital one. If your box arrives the day before launch, that is when your download starts.

How much space to free before the 12th

Consoles stage the download before unpacking it, so a game that fits on paper can still fail to install when the drive is nearly full. Make the space in the days before pre-load rather than on the night: the free-up guide lists the quickest wins per console, and the GTA 6 file size calculator tells you exactly how far you are from the line.

If deleting games is not enough, add storage before pre-load opens: an M.2 SSD for PS5 or a licensed expansion card for Xbox. The game runs from either at full speed, so you can pre-load straight onto the new drive.

How long the pre-load takes

Pre-load gives you a week. The calculator shows whether the download fits in one evening or needs the whole night.

Your connection

Use the console's own test for a real number: on PS5, Settings › Network › Connection Status › Test Internet Connection; on Xbox, Settings › General › Network settings › Test network speed & statistics. 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps.
