Rockstar has said nothing about a day-one update. Driffle estimates 15–30 GB and Stealthy Gaming 15–50 GB. We use the wider range. The calculator adds 15–50 GB on top of the GTA 6 install size, so it errs on the safe side. For scale, Red Dead Redemption 2 installed at 99 GB R source on PS4 in 2018, and GTA V at 87 GB R source on PS5 in 2022.
A pre-loaded copy still downloads the patch. The patch carries the work finished after the pre-load version was locked. Expect the console to download it before midnight on November 19, 2026, or when you first start the game. At 100 Mbps the patch takes 20 min to 1 h 7 min; how long GTA 6 takes to download works it out for your own speed.
Why a patch needs more space than its size
A patch needs more free space than its own size. The console downloads the update first, then applies it to the installed files, and while it does, old and new versions of the changed files sit on the drive together. On a nearly full drive the patch fails with a storage error, even when the sizes seemed to add up.
That is why the calculator adds 10 %: room for applying the patch and for the patches after launch. On PS5 and Xbox Series X it recommends 275 GB free, more than the 250 GB you get by adding the largest install and patch estimates.
If your drive is close to full even after a clear-out, add room before launch: an M.2 SSD for PS5 or a licensed expansion card for Xbox. GTA 6 and its patches run from either at full speed.
What we will publish on launch day
On November 19, 2026 this page gets the real patch size for PS5 and Xbox, the version number, and whether the pre-load already included it. The performance page gets the list of graphics modes from the settings menu, and the install-size figures across the site switch from estimate to confirmed. Each figure shows the date it was last checked.
